Holy Week at St Edward’s

Next week is ‘Holy Week’, the most solemn and moving week of the year for Christians, as we follow Jesus’ path to the cross.

On Saturday (23rd), the eve of Holy Week, at 5.00 pm there will be a simple contemplative Eucharist, with much silence.

Palm Sunday will begin with the usual Prayer Book service of Holy Communion, at which Bruce Kinsey will be the celebrant.

At 11.00 am there will be a special service for Palm Sunday including (weather permitting) an outdoor palm procession. Malcolm Guite will preach. There will be Godly Play for the children.

At the 5.00 pm Eucharist, there will also be a palm procession, and Fraser will preach.

On Monday to Wednesday in Holy Week, Malcolm will lead sessions at 5.30 pm exploring the events of Holy Week through art and poetry, and at 6.00 pm Fraser will lead a series of short service focusing on those events (ending c 6.30 pm). The themes are Mon: Weeping over Jerusalem; Tues: Cleansing of the Temple; Wed: Anointing at Bethany

On Thursday at 7.30 pm there will be a special Maundy Thursday Eucharist, commemorating the Last supper, and Jesus’ washing of the disciples’ feet. Fraser will preach.

On Good Friday there will be the usual Three Hours service, with the passion gospel, poems, hymns, prayers and silence. The preacher will be the Revd Dr Gregory Seach, Dean of Clare College. His theme will be ‘Remembering the Future, and a hope for the Whole Creation’. At 5.30 pm there will be the usual silent meditation, led by Fraser.

Do come and join us as we follow these momentous world-changing, life-giving events.
