This week at St Edwards

Today is Easter Day, and there will be the usual meditative Eucharist at 5.00 pm at which Fraser will preside and preach.

On Wednesday there will be On The Edge at 8.00 pm, at which Fraser will preach on ‘walking wounded’, linking the wounds of the risen Jesus with our wounds, and playing a selection of the many tracks that connect with the theme of ‘walking wounded’.

On Thursday there will be lunchtime prayers at 12.30, led by Fraser. On Friday at 10.30 am there will be Holy Communion, at which Vivienne Lake will be the celebrant. On Friday at 5.30 there will be meditation, led by Fraser.

Note that Easter Day coincides this year with the start of ‘summer time’ (even though summer weather has not yet arrived!)

If you have electoral roll forms that you have not yet returned, please bring them with you on Sunday. The final deadline is April 5th.

Holy Week at St Edward’s

Next week is ‘Holy Week’, the most solemn and moving week of the year for Christians, as we follow Jesus’ path to the cross.

On Saturday (23rd), the eve of Holy Week, at 5.00 pm there will be a simple contemplative Eucharist, with much silence.

Palm Sunday will begin with the usual Prayer Book service of Holy Communion, at which Bruce Kinsey will be the celebrant.

At 11.00 am there will be a special service for Palm Sunday including (weather permitting) an outdoor palm procession. Malcolm Guite will preach. There will be Godly Play for the children.

At the 5.00 pm Eucharist, there will also be a palm procession, and Fraser will preach.

On Monday to Wednesday in Holy Week, Malcolm will lead sessions at 5.30 pm exploring the events of Holy Week through art and poetry, and at 6.00 pm Fraser will lead a series of short service focusing on those events (ending c 6.30 pm). The themes are Mon: Weeping over Jerusalem; Tues: Cleansing of the Temple; Wed: Anointing at Bethany

On Thursday at 7.30 pm there will be a special Maundy Thursday Eucharist, commemorating the Last supper, and Jesus’ washing of the disciples’ feet. Fraser will preach.

On Good Friday there will be the usual Three Hours service, with the passion gospel, poems, hymns, prayers and silence. The preacher will be the Revd Dr Gregory Seach, Dean of Clare College. His theme will be ‘Remembering the Future, and a hope for the Whole Creation’. At 5.30 pm there will be the usual silent meditation, led by Fraser.

Passion Sunday at St Edward’s

Next Sunday, Passion Sunday, will begin at St Edward’s with the usual 8.00 am service of Holy Communion.

The 11.00 am service will be a special service for Passion Sunday, with readings and choral music for Passiontide (poems from Clive Sansom, music from Johan Saunders and Bob Chilcott). Fraser will preach, on costly crises that contain the seeds of recovery.

The 5.00 pm Eucharist will also be a healing service, at which Malcolm Guite will preach, on the link between passivity and the Passion. It will be his first Sunday sermon since his absence.

(Note that the preachers have swapped over from those announced in the March newsletter.)

There will be no more Taizé services on Mondays until next term.

On Tuesday at 5.30 pm Malcolm will give the third of three talks on Prayer and the Arts, focusing this week on music and song.

On Wednesday at 8.00 pm there will be On The Edge at which Malcolm will talk about ‘A Celtic Cross, exploring the meaning of the cross and passion through the music of ‘Celtic’ bands; U2, The Waterboys, Runrig, and The Hothouse Flowers.

On Thursday at 12.30 pm there will be prayers for reconciliation and healing, led by Matt Russell.

On Friday, as usual, there will be Holy Communion at 10.30 am with Alan Cole; and meditation at 5.30 with Fraser.

On Saturday (23rd), at 11.30 am there will be a first meeting of a pastoral support group, led by Fraser (for those interested in giving or receiving pastoral support). Also on Saturday, the eve of Holy Week, there will be a Contemplative Eucharist at 5.00 pm, with mush silence.

Sermons on March 17th

Fraser and Malcolm have swapped round their preachments on March 17th (Passion Sunday) from those given in the March newsletter.

Fraser will now preach at 11.00 am, and Malcolm will preach at 5.00 pm.

The week at St Edward’s

Next Sunday at St Edward’s will begin with the usual 8.00 am service of Holy Communion.

The 11.00 am service will be a special service for Mothering Sunday, at which children with young families will be especially welcome. There will be posies for the children to give to their mothers. Fraser will preach on how our relationships with parents shape our relationship with God.

At 3.30 pm Alfred Corn will talk to the LGBT group about his latest book of poems, ‘Tables’.

At the 5.00 pm Eucharist, Matt Russell will talk about returning from the ‘far country’ in the story of the Prodigal Son, and what is involved for each of us in returning from our own far country.

There will be a special Taizé service on Monday at 9.00 pm with a visit from Br Paolo of the Taizé community. There will be a bring and share meal from 7.00 pm.

On Tuesday at 5.30 pm Malcolm will give the second of three talks on Prayer and the Arts, focusing this week on Praying with Images and Icons

On Thursday at 12.30 pm there will be prayers for reconciliation and healing, led by Matt Russell.

On Friday, as usual, there will be Holy Communion at 10.30 am with Alan Cole; and meditation at 5.30 with Fraser.
